There is a lot of pressure attached to a first bridal appointment, much of it unnecessary. You do not have to walk into our Wishart studio knowing your shape, and you do not have to leave with a final dress. A good first fitting can simply give you better questions.
We like contrast for that reason. If the first gown is a fluid satin slip, the next might be an A-line, a full ball gown or a fitted mermaid while the feel of the first is still fresh. The change in your posture, movement and expression often tells you more than six near-identical versions of the same saved photograph.

What to learn before deciding what “suits” you
Body-shape rules are a poor substitute for a fitting room. They often tell a bride what she should hide or “balance” before she has even tried the dress. A first appointment works better when the questions are practical.
How does the skirt feel when you walk? Where does the waist of the gown meet your own waist? Can you sit without holding your breath? Do you recognise yourself in the mirror? Does the dress fit the mood of the venue and the way you want to move through the day?
Bring any reference images you genuinely like, but do not treat them as instructions. Tell the stylist what caught your eye: a clean fabric, open back, full skirt, detachable train or close silhouette. Those details make it easier to choose useful contrasts.
Six wedding-dress routes to try
1. A satin slip: Selene
Selene is a $599 backless satin slip wedding dress with spaghetti straps, a cowl neckline and sweep train.
A slip is the clearest test of a close, fluid shape. It has less skirt structure to separate you from the fabric, so look at the drape from the side and back as well as the front. Walk at a normal pace and sit fully. If you love the ease but want more coverage, that is useful information; if you like the clean surface but want more waist definition, say that instead of dismissing the whole category.
2. A satin A-line: Seraphine
At $2,499, Seraphine has a strapless satin A-line silhouette, draped bodice, statement bow and sweep train.
An A-line gives you more room through the skirt without the full scale of a ball gown. Check where the skirt begins to open and whether the bow feels like part of your look or the main event. This is also a useful gown for separating two preferences that often get bundled together: loving smooth satin does not automatically mean wanting a narrow skirt.
3. A full ball gown: Stellara
Stellara is a $999 strapless ball gown with a beaded bodice, layered peplum and voluminous sparkly tulle skirt.
Try one full gown even if you arrived convinced that it will be “too much”. The purpose is not to talk yourself into volume. It is to learn how a defined bodice and broad skirt feel in person. Walk through a doorway, sit and turn. Ask how the skirt would work in your ceremony space, car and reception. A quick, informed no is still progress.
4. A short bridal shape: Rora
At $1,299, Rora is a structured lace mini with organza puff sleeves and a detachable sweeping train.
This is the deliberate break from floor length. A short dress may suit a civil ceremony, reception change or bride who simply feels more like herself with her legs visible. Try it with and without the train. Notice whether the transformation feels genuinely useful for your day or adds a component you would rather not manage.
5. A fitted mermaid: Faye
Faye is a $1,599 off-shoulder pearl satin mermaid wedding gown.
A mermaid test is about more than the outline in a still photo. Sit, take a full step and reach forward. Pay attention to where the skirt begins to flare and how the off-shoulder line behaves when your arms move. If the shape feels right but the neckline does not, keep the silhouette on your list and change the neckline question.
6. A detachable-train structure: Talita
At $1,499, Talita has a detachable train, 3D floral skirt and sheer corset bodice.
Use this gown to test whether you want one fixed silhouette or a look that changes. View it from the back in both arrangements and ask who would attach, remove and store the train on the day. A convertible feature earns its place when it solves a real ceremony-to-reception need, not just because it creates another photograph.
A simple order for the fitting room
Start with the shape closest to your current idea, then choose its strongest contrast. A slip could be followed by the ball gown; the A-line by the mermaid; the short dress by the detachable-train gown. After three dresses, pause and describe what changed.
Use concrete notes: “I liked the clean satin but wanted a wider skirt,” or “the full skirt felt comfortable, but I did not want sparkle. ” These observations help the stylist choose the next gown. “It did not suit me” gives almost no direction.
Bring secure, light-coloured underwear and shoes close to the heel height you expect. You do not need a complete bridal outfit. Avoid buying shapewear before you know the neckline, back and internal structure of the dress. If you are bringing guests, choose people who can listen to what you say before offering their own verdict.
Review the appointment before saving more dresses
Give yourself a little time after the fitting before rebuilding the shortlist. Look at your notes by element rather than ranking every gown from one to six. You may discover that the useful result is a combination you did not try: the clean satin of Selene, the skirt width of Seraphine and the secure feeling of a different bodice.
Separate an alteration question from a silhouette decision. A sample that is long or loose in one area does not necessarily disqualify the shape, but it also does not prove that every change is simple. Ask what would need to happen to the exact gown and have any substantial work assessed by a professional. Do not assume a seam can be let out, a decorated hem can be shortened cheaply or a neckline can be rebuilt without affecting the dress.
Also write down what you did not miss. If you felt no need for a train, heavy sparkle or an open back, that absence can narrow the next appointment more effectively than adding another twenty inspiration images. A good second shortlist is usually smaller and more specific than the first.
